Fit checks
Signs a dog crate is too small or too large
Use the calculator result, then confirm the fit with simple movement checks.
Practical signs that a dog crate may be too small, too large, or poorly matched to the dog's measurements.
Signs the crate may be too small
A dog should not have to crouch, twist awkwardly, or curl tightly just to fit inside.
- The dog cannot sit without touching the roof.
- The dog cannot turn around without rubbing the sides.
- The dog cannot lie down with a normal stretch.
Signs the crate may be too large
Too much unused space can be awkward for some training setups, especially with puppies.
- A puppy has far more sleeping area than needed.
- A divider would make the space more practical while the dog grows.
- The crate is difficult to place safely in the intended room.
Fit problem signs
| Sign | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Head or ears touch roof | Too low | Compare sitting height with internal height. |
| Awkward turning | Too narrow or short | Check shoulder width and length. |
| Large unused area for puppy | Too much current space | Use a divider or smaller temporary crate. |
