Dog crate internal vs external dimensions
Use internal dimensions for dog fit and external dimensions for room placement.
Why advertised dog crate dimensions can differ from the usable internal space your dog actually has.
Advertised size is often outside length
A 36 in crate is usually a retail size label, not a promise that the dog has 36 in of internal usable length. Wire thickness, plastic walls, trays, latches, and rounded corners can all reduce usable space.
- Find the internal length, width, and height where possible.
- Check whether the tray edge reduces floor space.
- Use external dimensions for measuring where the crate will sit in your home.
Both sets of dimensions matter
The dog needs internal comfort, while your room, vehicle, or doorway needs external clearance. Treat them as two separate checks before buying.
- Compare calculator dimensions with internal crate dimensions.
- Compare room space with external crate dimensions.
- Check door swing or crate access in the planned location.
Dimension comparison
| Dimension | Use it for | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Internal length | Dog fit | Often smaller than advertised size. |
| External length | Room placement | Does not tell you usable dog space. |
| Door size | Entry and exit | Can be lower than internal height. |
